NEW PARENTS - Belmont Plateau is one of the great picnic areas in Fairmont Park.  Bring a folding chair or a picnic blanket.  It's okay for the kids to do some playing around before their race.  Light running while throwing a frisbee or football is good for them. (N.B.light running).

WHAT TO EAT BEFORE A RACE - Fruit, pancakes, waffles, pasta or other carbohydrates, no greasy foods.  Bacon and eggs are not recommended. Drinks - Drink water, fruit juices or sports drinks, do not drink milk or carbonated sodas.  Eat at least 2 hours before your race.

BEFORE PRACTICE - The same goes for snacks after school and before practice.  Often kids have a bad day at practice because they drink soda or milk, eat potato chips or some other greasy food before practice resulting in upset stomachs and very upset runners.

RUNNING SHOES - We do a lot of running on hard surfaces.  If the kids do not have good running shoes they will get hurt.  When you are buying running shoes advise the sales person that they are for cross country, both practice and meets.  Spiked shoes are permitted for meets.

PROGRAM GOALS
  • Athletes and coaches have fun at practice and meets.
  • Achieve each runner's potential.
  • Teach Runners to set goals and work to achieve their goals.
  • Teach Runners how to compete and overcome fear of failure.
  • Teach Runners to accept success and failure graciously.

COMPETITION - Cross Country competition combines individual and team competition.  Individual times and place are recorded each week.  Team competition is only calculated at Championship Meets.  Team Competition - Team competition is by age group.  To compete as a team we need three runners in an age group.  A team score is the total of the places of the first three finishers.

  • Area E Champs, Sunday, October 16th at Gwynedd-Mercy High School.  More information later.

HELP AT PRACTICE – Beginning Wednesday, September 7th practice will begin and end at the Immaculate Conception parking lot.  Primarily practice will be running on streets and sometimes at Abington Friends.  Parents or other volunteers are welcome to join us at practice and serve as crossing guards.  Our normal practice streets, Vernon Road and Newbold Road, are quite streets and don’t involve a lot of traffic, but we prefer to err on the side of caution.

Any comments or questions you have please do not hesitate to contact George O'Connell at practice, home 215-572-7507 or work 215-887-4425.
